Hi crisis team

I have two question about zoneless method in R-CRISIS software about "seismicity models" part in *gps file:  How can we justify non-uniform seismicity, although the same activity rate is assigned for each magnitude range at different sources?

Is my understanding correct that we will determine the value of the landa for all sources, then we assign calculated Landa in each magnitude sets to nodes in the grid?

Tnx for your help. and pls explain me. Good luck.

Dear Roja,

First of all, I want to clarify that images, tables and all values presented in the R-CRISIS Help Menu are not real, they are hypothetical and their unique objective is to show an example of using R-CRISIS. Therefore, the values you highlighted in the attached image are equal just by coincidence.

Generalized Poissonian seismicity model is an option, suggested by Dr. Ramón Secanell, in which the seismicity is given by means of a non-parametric description of the activity (or occurrence) rates of earthquakes of given magnitudes at one or various sources.

Occurrence rates associated for each magnitude bin and source is defined by you in the *.gps file, therefore, you do not have to specify a lambda0 value for a certain source because the seismicity is already described by the Generalized Poissonian seismicity file.

This option is frequently used to describe the seismicity of numerous point sources whose geometrical properties (location, rupture planes) are given by means of an SSG (smoothed seismicity geometry) file. In this case, R-CRISIS interprets that each source described in this seismicity file corresponds to a point source described in the *.ssg file.

However, this Generalized Poisson model can be used to describe, in a non-parametric manner, the seismicity of area or line geometries. In these cases, R-CRISIS will interpret that the occurrence rates given in the *.gps file are associated to the whole area/line, so the program will uniformly distribute the occurrence rate across/along the area/line.

I hope this solves your questions.

Thank you for your preference and interest in R-CRISIS.

Best regards,
